How a Make-Over Day became a Milestone Celebration
I thought going for a make-over day would be a great thing to do intellectually, albeit, not something I would usually sign up for. The reason being that anything clothing and photography related has generally had me running in the opposite direction for as long as I can remember. Clothes shopping has filled me with fear and loathing since I was a young girl, as I could seemingly never find anything remotely decent to fit and it was always trauma which left me feeling ugly, socially outcast and clumsy.
The 40kg journey from 108kg 12 years ago to now has been a process of understanding what lay behind the weight; and I’ve been fortunate to decipher the programming. But I was completely caught off guard at said make-over day. The professionals had gone shopping based on a questionnaire I’d completed in which I’d specified that I was now a size 12, a significant departure from size 22-24. When my outfit was given to me, I noted that it had been not been sourced from my sizing benchmark. Instantly, I was nervous that they may not fit and I was flooded with the same shame and anxiety I have always had around clothes shopping.
But the clothes did fit!
When I stepped out from behind the screen Janine Starkey of tweak&Style looked at me and said “It’s like dressing Barbie” – I burst into tears. I’d never considered myself easy to dress – it’s why I’ve hated (yes it’s a strong word) shopping all my life. In that moment, I acknowledged reclaiming my emotional health, mental vitality and physical wellness (weight loss is a by-product, it’s not the be-all-and-end-all). I moved wholeheartedly into the present, which is where my body lives. My head and heart finally caught up to know that I am worthy; and so are YOU.
I share this, as part of The Worthiness Project – A Practical Guide to Self-Worth. I did not know going into the day, that it would offer the cherry on top of a 12-year process.
What’s your next step in claiming a deeper sense of self-worth? I’d love to hear from you…
